Achieving net zero targets within a
global fuel crisis

Speakers
Jenny Juritz - David Morley Architects
Laura O'Leary - MZA Consulting Engineer
Paul Cooper - Ridge & Partners
Alex Duckworth - AECOM

Venue: The Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London, WC1E 7BT

Time; 7.45 - 10.15am

“Transitioning to a net-zero world is one of the greatest challenges humankind has faced. It calls for nothing less than a complete transformation of how we produce, consume, and move about.”

United Nations

According to the World Green Building Council, buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions: 28% from operational carbon, and 11% from embodied carbon.

Last year the government published a Net Zero Strategy, setting out a roadmap to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and other global factors have fundamentally changed the economic landscape, particularly in the UK, placing huge pressure on households and business through high energy prices and broader inflationary pressures.

As a result, the government has commissioned a review into its approach to ensure that delivering the net zero target does not place undue burdens on businesses or consumers and is “pro-business and pro-growth”.

Come and join us as our panel of experts look to discuss:

•             What does Net Zero mean for design and construction?

•             What are the most effective ways to reduce emissions?

•             Are the targets achievable?

•             Does “off-site” carbon offsetting fudge the issue?

•             Where do you see the Government Review taking us?

•             What will the impact of the current fuel crisis have on achieving Net Zero targets?

She studied Architecture at the University of Cape Town, completed RIBA Part 3 in London and an MSc in Building Energy Use at Cranfield University. She a BREEAM Accredited Professional and has been project leader on several innovative, low carbon education, residential, sports and arts buildings in the UK, South Africa, and the USA.

Jennifer provides sustainable design consultancy and BREEAM services and also manages the Practices ISO 14001 certification. Her recent projects include a number of sustainable retrofit and re-use schemes for historic buildings.

Laura O'Leary
MZA Consulting Engineers

Laura joined MZA as a Mechanical Engineer in April 2015. As director of the Dublin office, Laura has delivered a broad spectrum of projects, from small scale refurbishments to large-scale engineering projects, with significant experience in Education, Leisure, Residential, Custodial & Office/Commercial projects.

She is a Member of the Institute of Engineers of Ireland as well as holding an Associate Membership of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Laura has a particular interest in low carbon design strategies, renewable technologies, DfMA and pre-fabricated strategies and integration of pre-manufactured value where applicable.

Paul Cooper
Ridge & Partners

Paul has over 20years experience in Building Services Engineering and leads our Building Services team in Cambridge. He has worked across a large range of sectors and has undertaken some nationally significant and unique projects. Most recently, Paul was the MEP lead for the National Satellite Test Facility at Harwell, which contained some of the world’s largest cleanroom facilities.

He has a particular enthusiasm for projects which add social value, particularly those in the Education Sector, where he has delivered over 60 new school buildings.

Paul is passionate about producing more sustainable buildings and increasing collaboration between design teams and other professionals, these partnerships have endured for many years.

Alex Duckworth
AECOM

Alex is an Associate Director in AECOM’s Sustainable Development Group. He has worked within the sustainable building industry for over 14 years with a range of experiences from low energy building design in the domestic and non-domestic sectors to research for the UK Government and more recently helping the Government to expend the prevalence of Low Carbon Heat Networks. The building design experience includes work for developers and house builders seeking to meet significant carbon reduction targets with financially viable solutions.

Alex has been involved with a range of projects where different solutions have been considered including communal hybrid gas boilers, heat pump solutions involving air, ground and water source systems. Other schemes where legacy technology is installed. Alex has worked closely with design teams to undertake feasibility assessments with the aim of future proofing the existing heat network for a low carbon future.
