Educational Buildings

Speakers:
Philip Webb

Gary Morgan
Adam Taylor

Venue: Society Building Fitzrovia, 55 Whitfield St, London, W1T 4AH

Time: 7.45 - 10.15am

During the COVID epidemic, air quality came to the fore of conversation around education settings, but has since fallen down in importance despite the significant impact that it can have on learning outcomes, absenteeism and long term health. In this session we invite air quality experts to share their views on this key topic.

Key points will include:

  • Are we doing well or badly in managing air quality within education settings in the UK,

  • The impacts that poor air quality can have on students and teachers,

  • Latest research on which pollutants are more damaging,

  • Review of the different solutions available.

Speakers

Philip Webb
Health and Wellbeing 360 (Chief Executive Officer)

Philip Webb is an experienced healthcare professional with a background spanning academia, industry, and the public sector. He is currently the industry representative on the Promoting Awareness of Air Pollution Delivery Group. With a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, Philip brings a multidisciplinary perspective to health and wellbeing, combining expertise in health economics, innovation, and digital technologies.

His career includes a decade in the pharmaceutical industry across sales, marketing and medical affairs, followed by over 20 years in the NHS, where he held leadership roles in specialised commissioning, cancer delivery and value-based healthcare.

Philip is a passionate advocate for user-centric design, intelligent technology, and healthier indoor environments, particularly in settings like schools where air quality can have a significant impact on wellbeing, cognition and long-term health outcomes.

Gary Morgan
ECO-Airvent

Gary Morgan is the Founder and National Sales Manager of ECO-Airvent, a British manufacturer specialising in ventilation solutions for the education, commercial, and industrial sectors. With over 30 years of experience in the building services industry, Gary has worked with major manufacturers across ventilation, space heating, and energy-efficient electrical systems.

He was a member of the BB101 advisory group for the 2018 update of the Department for Education’s design guidelines, contributing to the development of standards for ventilation in school buildings. At the upcoming event, Gary will discuss key updates to BB101, how the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped thinking around classroom ventilation, and practical solutions for maintaining good indoor air quality in schools.

Adam Taylor
ARM Environments

Since completing his mechanical engineering degree, Adam has spent more than two decades working in air quality and thermal comfort. He began his career as a mechanical design engineer, initially designing domestic heating systems, before spending a decade designing bespoke air distribution systems with a focus on enhanced thermal comfort.

In 2016, he began promoting adoption of the soon-to-be-released BB101 guidelines to MEP designers. This revolutionary standard aimed to improve air quality and thermal comfort in schools through demand-controlled heat recovery and natural ventilation solutions. In 2018, Adam began working internationally in the emerging field of indoor air cleaning technologies and went on to found ARM Environments, a specialist IAQ contractor.

Adam holds positions in several prominent national and international indoor air quality roles, including Chair of the Building and Engineering Services Association (BESA) IAQ Group, membership in the GCP Europe IAQ taskforce, and the role of UK industry representative for the Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC). He has also recently joined the CIBSE Air Quality Working Group.

Adam is actively involved in publicly funded innovation programmes to advance the deployment of novel solutions for reducing exposure to air pollution, most recently completing an Innovate UK-funded project using AI to transform how facilities managers use energy and environmental quality data. He has contributed to the development of several international healthy building standards, including Fitwel and AirRated, and has previously served as WELL Faculty.
